"Our fireman are not heroic."

First of all, this is not a quote by me!

I was in a small discussion with a person who has a strong opinion about how fireman, police officers, and even those in the military fighting in wars are NOT to be considered heroes. This person said that the only heroes are those who aren't being paid. They said they were "sick and tired of all the media giving credit and honoring" those who are being paid to rescue lives.
They then went on to comment that lifeguards save more lives than any other rescue force.

Hmm.... I definitely know what my opinion is on the subject... but what's yours? How would you react or respond?

Aren't lifeguards paid too? So does it make doctors who saves lives after a tragic accident not heros.

I would tell skeezy mckeezerson that he is a moron, and then I would say something like this.

It doesn't matter if someone is being paid or not if they are putting their life on the line for someone else...or if they are saving someones life such as a doctor..they are heros. There are teachers who get paid pennies but that save children from lives of pain because they care..they too are heros.

This person aka Skeezy McKeezerson obviously needs some "non" hero to save him or someone he loves to realize how true a hero these selfLESS people are!

Can I get an AMEN? AMEN!!

I second everything Kandis said! What a stupid person. Who would say such crap. Next time that person goes to vote maybe he should remember the only reason he gets to do that is because of the men and women who have fought for our freedom! They are my heros.....and I happen to be married to one and he is my hero!

I think that's crazy talk! Anybody who is putting their life on the line for all of us is considered a hero in my book.

Trust me, I was as appalled as you all! I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
And seriously, there isn't a salary large enough to make it worth it to run into a burning, collapsing building or fight front line in a war unless it was for selfless motives. I'm embarassed for this "mystery" person. How unpatriotic.

That conversation would have gotten violent very quickly. I guess i am biased because i have family members in the military and have had other "HERO'S" in my life. I think its rude and disgusting. This person needs to grow heart and remove the stick from their rear which seems to be affecting the judgment and common sense. I could go on but my blood pressure is rising.

That statement make me so so mad!!!! My husband was in the military and he missed the first year of his sons life to keep us free here, is that really worth any pay check? And I can confirm that yeah they are paid, but not a whole lot, people are in these jobs because they want to help, not to make millions. I am so greatful everyday for our military, police, firefighters, and any others who help everyday.

Well, Adam is in Air Force so it says it all!!! He wasn't deployed yet but he is going to be risking his life when he does. I never know what mission he will be sent to. But military does take care of the families. They pay us. Yes!! Heck why not. My husband has to go out and do dangerous job so his wife would take care of kids and work because he would do it for free? Hell no.

On the other hand at BUY-I there was one lifeguard who didn't know how to save life and my brother-in-law almost died if it would be for a paramedic who ended up being in a pool at that time.

Now, I am talking about military here since it's my life right now, but these people (now I am choosing to look up to good examples) are trained to go out and protect our country and I see their attitude and how honored they are to serve. Those people are my heroes. And just because there is one person who doesn't satisfy someone's point of view it's wrong to think about ALL of them as non-heroes.

I would have to ask "how many lives have you saved today?" The average person isn't qualified to save a life during an emergency situation. In order to have adequately trained and available help, you have to have people on call 24/7. Maybe this person would be willing to do all the training required to be a fireman or a police officer and then be on standby for some 24 hour shifts without any compensation. I highly doubt it.

Push that person into a burning building and then we'll see what he/she says!
